These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Schmidty Builds, LLC ("we," "us," or "our") covering the Yarnia app, the yarnia.ai website, and everything we provide through them (together, "Yarnia").
By creating an account or using Yarnia, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use Yarnia. Our Privacy Policy explains what we do with data and forms part of this agreement.
You must be at least 18 years old, able to enter into a contract, and the parent or legal guardian of any child who uses the account.
Children do not create accounts. You create and control the account, choose the reading level and content settings, and supervise your child's use of it. You are responsible for everything that happens under your account, including anything your child does, so keep your sign-in credentials to yourself.
Yarnia is intended for personal and family use. It is not licensed for commercial use, classroom deployment across a school, or resale, unless we agree to that separately in writing.
Yarnia writes original children's stories with an AI model and illustrates them. You give it a few words; it grows a story at the reading level you chose.
Because the stories are generated rather than pre-written, every story is new and no two are guaranteed to be alike. Automated checks run before a child sees a story — the words typed in are screened, the returned text is scanned, and English-language stories at the early decoding levels are additionally checked against the letter-sound patterns the story is meant to give practice with. Those checks are automated, and automated checks are not perfect. Read alongside your child, and tell us when something is wrong.
Two limits are worth stating plainly, because they define what Yarnia can and cannot do for you:
Yarnia is not a substitute for a teacher, a reading specialist, a tutor, or a formal assessment, and nothing in it should be treated as educational, medical, or professional advice.
Use Yarnia the way it is meant to be used. Specifically, you agree not to:
If you break these rules we may limit, suspend, or close your account. Where the breach is minor and fixable we will normally tell you first; where it puts a child or our service at risk, we may act immediately.
You keep whatever rights you have in the words you type into Yarnia. Subject to these Terms, we grant you the right to use the stories, illustrations, and coloring pages Yarnia generates for you for personal and family purposes — reading them, printing them, and sharing them with people you know.
AI-generated output cannot be exclusive. A similar prompt from another family may produce a similar story, and we cannot and do not promise that any generated story or illustration is unique to you. The legal status of AI-generated work also differs between countries, and we make no promise about whether any generated story or image can be copyrighted.
To run the service, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, copy, process, transmit, and display the content created under your account. This exists so the app can work — saving a story, generating its illustrations, showing it in your library, delivering a share link, and displaying it in Browse where you have left that on. It does not let us sell your stories or use your child's content in advertising.
By default, stories created in your account may be discoverable by other Yarnia users in the Browse section. You can change that default in Profile > Settings, or make an individual story private in your Library. Sharing a story generates a private link, which works for anyone who has it — treat it like an unlisted link, not a secret.
We may remove any story, illustration, or other content from Browse, from sharing, or from the service entirely, at any time, if we believe it breaks these Terms, is unsafe or inappropriate for children, infringes someone's rights, or exposes personal information. We may do this without notice where a child could be harmed. We are not obliged to review content before it appears, and removing some content does not oblige us to remove other content.
If you see something in Yarnia that should not be there, email [email protected] with enough detail to find it and we will review it.
Yarnia is built for the App Store Kids category, and these commitments follow from that:
No filter catches everything. If something inappropriate reaches your child, tell us at [email protected] — those reports are how the filters get better.
Yarnia offers a free tier and paid subscription plans, plus an occasional one-time story pack. All purchases are made through Apple's in-app purchase system. Apple, not Yarnia, processes the payment and holds your payment details.
The name, length, and price of every subscription are shown in the app before you buy, and again on Apple's confirmation screen. Prices differ by country and may change over time; Apple notifies you and asks for your agreement before an increase applies to an existing subscription.
Subscriptions auto-renew. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, Apple charges your Apple ID for the next period at the then-current price, and this repeats until you cancel.
You cancel in your Apple ID settings — on iPhone, Settings > your name > Subscriptions — not in Yarnia. We cannot cancel a subscription for you. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for.
Where a free trial is offered, it converts into a paid subscription automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.
One detail is deliberate and worth knowing: a trial and the first paid month that follows it share a single allowance of stories. They are not two separate allowances. This keeps the trial an honest preview of one month of Yarnia rather than a way to receive an extra month of stories.
Each plan includes an allowance of stories per billing period, shown in the app. Unused stories do not roll over into the next period. Story packs bought separately are not tied to a billing period and remain usable for one year from the date of purchase.
Purchases are made through Apple, so refunds are requested from Apple and granted at Apple's discretion under Apple's policies. We cannot issue a refund for an App Store purchase ourselves. If you have a problem, email [email protected] — we will help where we can, even though the refund decision is not ours.
If Apple refunds a purchase, we reverse the stories from that purchase that you have not yet used. Stories your child already created stay in your library; we do not take them back.
When you request a refund, Apple may ask us how much of the purchase had been used. What we send Apple, and what we deliberately withhold, is set out in section 8 of the Privacy Policy.
We may add, change, rename, or retire plans and features. If we materially reduce what a plan you are currently paying for includes, we will give you notice through the app or by email so you can cancel before the next renewal.
You can delete your account at any time in the app under Account > Delete Account. Deleting the account deletes your stories, illustrations, your child's coloring drawings, and reading practice data, as described in the Privacy Policy.
Deleting your account does not cancel your Apple subscription. Cancel that separately in your Apple ID settings, or Apple will keep billing you.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these Terms, or stop offering Yarnia entirely. If we close your account without cause, or discontinue the service, we will give you reasonable notice and a way to export your stories where we can.
Yarnia is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, whether express, implied, or statutory, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, or uninterrupted or error-free operation.
We do not warrant that generated stories will be accurate, appropriate, original, or suitable for any particular child, and we do not warrant that our safety filters will catch every unsuitable output. You remain responsible for supervising what your child reads.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Schmidty Builds, LLC and its officers, members, and contractors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, or loss of goodwill, arising out of or connected with your use of Yarnia — whether the claim is brought in contract, tort, or otherwise, and even if we were told such damages were possible.
Our total liability for all claims relating to Yarnia is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for Yarnia in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) twenty-five US dollars (US$25).
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
Yarnia is distributed through the App Store, and the following apply to that distribution:
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute that is not resolved informally will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Utah, and you consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.
If you live outside the United States, this does not take away any protection you have under the mandatory consumer laws of the country you live in.
Before filing anything, please email [email protected]. Nearly everything is faster to fix that way.
If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force. Our not enforcing a provision on one occasion is not a waiver of it. You may not transfer your rights under these Terms; we may transfer ours as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between us about Yarnia.
We may update these Terms as Yarnia changes. We will update the effective date above, and for material changes we will give notice in the app or by email. Continuing to use Yarnia after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Terms. If you do not accept them, delete your account and cancel your subscription in your Apple ID settings.
